That one will not work as far as I know sorry.
If you dont want to pay the $100 for the wireless adaptor(dont blame you, I wouldnt, and havnt, either.) I would highly recomend doing what I do. Simply running a massive cable from the router to your 360. My router is downstairs, at the back left side of the house. My 360 is upstairs, at the front right side of the house. All I did was drill a hole through the wall in my computer room, and in my bedroom(where the 360 is) and run a massive cable(think its around 90 feet or so) over the roof of my house. The cable cost barely anything, it was simple to install, and it guarantees me a strong connection where a wireless connection wouldnt.

300ft (100m) is max length for cat5 cable.
Its always best to cable your house anyway. I did that at my parents house years ago, and they still use it. Nothing beats having a nice internet wall jack accessible in any room. I think it took me a day to wire their whole house. I just drilled through the floors and dropped the cable into the basement. |

I bought the official one, it may be expensive but I read up on the alternatives before and it was rated the best choice on many aspects so if I were in your position (and I was) I would shell out the extra for the official one.
And no the old ones don't work I tried myself. |

i dont think official really matters or not, an ethernet cable is an ethernet cable. I know they sell xbox live cables, but thats just any old ethernet cable.
