new member here and probably one or the oldest (in age). Bought my Son a xbox 360 sixteen months ago and all has been fine. Just after Xmas I was having a clearout and threw the reciept (first mistake) and within a week we got those three red flashin lights. I knew nothing about them until I checked it out on the net and duly sent the box away to be repaired by a third party repairer .... not knowing about the extended Microsoft warranty. the 360 came back with a added fan (which I was advised to have put in) and as soon as I plugged it in we got one red light flashing on the bottom of the right quadrant. I looked for advice on this and followed the instructions given by micorsoft (which was the usual, unplug everything and start over). When the machine was plugged in again I instantly got the three flashin lights again. So apart from almost throwing the damn thing out the window, I found this site and am asking for any help or advice you might have. The company who did the repair dont seem interested in having the machine back so I will be looking at "trading standards" to get my £100" back, but in the meantime any help will be much appreciated ..........

thanx

You're going to have to call MS and send it in for repairs

You can try lieing to them yes, but Im pretty sure they will notice that it has been opened and has had an extra fan installed...thats kinda obvious..I would suggest that once they receive it and go to open it, they will see its been altered, and will simply send it back to you.

I say just keep at the company that you sent it to because you paid them money to fix it, and they didnt fix it. Theres got to be a law agaisnt something like that, some consumer protection law or something.

I'll be buying my 360 next month. Is there anything I should do or prepare myself so I don't have any problems (which model/package to buy, extended warranty options, etc)? Thanks!

Definitely make sure you pick up a Falcon chip model(Believe it is indicated by it using 175W as opposed to 200 something. This can be found on the side of the box) Dont worry with an extended warranty as M$ offers a 1 year warranty that covers everything, and a 3 year warranty that covers the RROD. Theres not really anything, just keep it an a well ventilated area once you get it(ie dont put it in a small cupboard under your TV kind of thing that has no air flow) Also putting it on carpet isnt a very good idea, and having it horizontal is always a better choice as theres no chance of it being knocked over or damaged.

Thats still dumb, my experience proves your misperceptions wrong. It cools better STANDING UP, if you aren't a BAFOON you won't knock it down. Even then, it is protected mainly by the plastic casing. I got in a FIGHT with a family member in this room and monitors and everything were knocked over because we were bumping the table, it hit a table a little lower down and all it got was a knotch at the top, it runs perfectly fine.

Stop being a payne in the ass.

Having it standing up causes more scratch to the discs
Plus intercoolers are never too expensive

Isn't that only with the old drives?

They can get to be expensive when they kill your 360 and void your warranty.

Most people seem to come to the consensus that horizontal is better, but I'm not sure if there is much truth to it.

Yes Nyko does(I went through their repair service) but only Nyko offers the repairs, no other 3rd party company does.

and paint, it only voids your warranty if your stupid enough to tell M$ that you use a 3rd party product Im pretty dam certain you even said that yourself a while back.

The old consoles do definitely scratch your disks if you have the console vertical, thats where all the horizontal is better then vertical arguments originated. Im pretty sure M$ has fixed the problem, but Ive not actually heard any word on whether they have or not.(if your wondering how, the old consoles(and maby new ones as I said I duno?) didnt have the little protector thing by the laser so the disk could touch the laser which badly scratches the disk. My PDZ disk suffered this and it is now mostly unplayable.)
