It is definitely not worth it. There is only a very small library of movies for it, and there will be no more releases on the format. And while you don't need an HDTV to watch HDDVDs, you will get virtually no advantages over DVDs if you don't.

Then what? They could make up the $10 that they spent?

Optical media is dead anyway. Digital distribution is the future.
