Not only that, I'd rather have an official copy of a game, which is more reliable than a fake, and not have MS trying to hunt me down.

A softmod is modding the software without having it chipped. You have to connect the 360's DVD drive to your PC and flash it with some hacked firmware. You don't always get banned either, as long as you make sure you are using the newest undetectable firmware and always check for to see if they have found a way to detect it before you use Live. I love Live though, so that is all that is keeping me from modding mine. That and how you have to void the warranty of something that is almost surely going to break. And how is the gameplay experience better if you have the original game? The backup will be exactly the same. You can even get a Lightscribe drive and DVDs to make the DVD look real and print the cover and instruction booklets to put in a DVD case.

I just answered that. It is modding the software, rather than just getting it chipped or something. So if you softmod it you won't need a chip or anything.
