I've been hearing a lot of positive reviews for the standalone HD DVD peripheral but after the recent news of Blockbuster pulling support for HD DVD im a little hesitant.

I don't have a ps3 or blu-ray player so this is probably my only shot at getting a HD player - but i dont wanna be buying technology that is already dated.

Does anyone have any advice?

I would wait and see where the format war goes. I'm not going to buy it unless Blu-ray fails since I have my PS3.

Sure, but if you already have a DVD player nearby, then HD is not worth a whole new purchase despite the fact that it's 360 friendly. As for Blu-Ray, I think it's great but it's not needed when added to the PS3. Skyrocketed the price.

Developers have said that it is needed. DVDs won't be big enough for the games this generation and the 360 games will all be short (Gears) because they have to fit them on a DVD, where if it was on the PS3 and had Blu-ray it could be much longer. Look at The Darkness, the PS3 version has more content, because they couldn't fit it on a DVD.

Ya, but it would cost them more. Some games wouldn't work very well with multiple discs either. Can you imagine playing a game like GTA or something and having to get up and change the disc whenever you go to a different area? That would suck ass. And they try not to put it on multiple discs. You can see that by looking at The Darkness. Its a lot less efficient too, because they have to have all the basic components of the game repeated on every disc.

for the darkness, its fine, ive played plenty of shooters that use more than 1 disc (like RE4)
for gta4 yah it would suck, but it wouldnt have to be "every new area" at most, it would only use 2 discs, so thats only having to change it once, and you get up to go the bathroom anyways, is it that big of a deal?

Well a Blu-ray can hold more than five times what a DVD can and they don't have to have the basic stuff more than once, so if there was a huge game that used a whole BD then you would have to have probably five or six DVDs. It would be a huge deal in GTA type game because what if you are getting chased by the police and then you drive accross a bridge and you have to get up and change the disc. Then you have to turn around and go to a gun shop or something, so you have to change the disc again. It would suck very badly.

Probably not, but there are probably things that were left out because they had to fit on a DVD.

Yea I think in the long run GTA 4 on 360 would be better you get more out of the game by just playing it, As for HD DVD if you got the cash then grate but for now let it just slide for a lil while longer
