My pc has soundmax card in it which has an optical input/output. If I plug my xbox into it should I then get sound through my speakers in the outputs? Have tried it and can't get it to work.

If you have digital/optical speakers you should get digital audio. Any digital signal you put through audio speakers will still be analog audio. Even if the signal sent to the analog speakers (if that is even possible, maybe with conversions but I don't think there is a way) is digital it will still be analog audio.
However if you have digital/optical speakers you could easily google the process combination of in's and outs you have to plugin with a digital connection, its fairly easy after you get it down. |

You may have to Enable the digital input for it to recognize the cable. Check the properties of the sound card.
Not bad for a first post huh?
