Im a fairly new Xbox 360 owner and have been trying my best to read up everything in sight since getting it.

Thing is im getting a little worried about the number of people getting the dreaded ring of death and subsequent console failure.

Im just wondering if there are any precautions or measure i can take to prevent this from happening? Is that the case or is it (as i suspect) just lottery of bad hardware?

Sorry, it really is just down to luck. I personally believe that the 360 just has poor hardware, im on my second console now due to a burnt out dvd drive.

Just try and keep the console as cool as possible and keep praying to the 360 gods

Ok, guess i'll just keep my fingers crossed

Are there any 'tell tale' signs that something may be up though?

I would imagine they vary quite a bit. For i was getting DRE's (Disc read errors) daily and the console was running quite loudly at this point too).

If you've only just bought it you'll be covered under warranty so just relax and enjoy it - it's when that warranty comes to an end you are allowed to be a little anxious

It will probably happen eventually no matter what. The things on YouTube are just temporary fixes to give you another week or two. Anyway, I think mine is starting to die, as the fans have begun to make grinding noises. It still performs perfectly though and I have the extended warranty, so I'm not too worried.

If you are out of warranty then you can always just take it to Walmart and tell them you lost your receipt. I did that the first time my PS2 died.

just make sure to keep it in a well ventilated area and besides that, dont do anything stupid with it.

i just got my 360 today and i found out that puting it on the side isn't the best thing. i found when i kept it on the side the side that was down would like burn up. so i started keeping it standing up when i am going to use it and put it on the side when i was done.

What do you mean it would burn up? It should be cooler when it is horizontal because when it is vertical you are blocking one of the vents off.

actually that isnt a vent. on the other side of that plastic piece is mostly just a layer of metal. it has like 1 or 2 holes but not enough to cause ANY difference if covered up or not
