If you have a version 1 xbox 360 can you get it upgraded so it can take an hdmi cable

No. The older 360s aren't capable of outputting in digital. You could buy a converter box, but they are $100 minimum and the quality would probably be just as bad or worse than if you were using an analog format because it would get the same distortion before it gets to the converter and would probably get distorted more during the conversion.
